Ohio

Ohio is a state in the East North Central region of the Midwestern of the USA. It is bordered by Michigan and Lake Erie in the north, Pennsylvania and West Virginia in the east, Kentucky and West Virginia in the south, and Indiana in the west. With a population of nearly 11.7 million, is the seventh-most populous and tenth-most densely populated state. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus, and its governor is Mike De Wine.

The climate of Ohio is a humid continental climate throughout most of the state, so temperatures are similar to those across the north-central and eastern United States, with summer highs seldom reaching 100 °F (38 °C) and winter lows rarely dropping below −20 °F (−29 °C). The great hardwood forests that covered almost all of Ohio prior to European settlement were reduced to about one-tenth of the state’s area by 1900. However, during the 20th century the state government inaugurated various woodlands-reclamation and forest-management programs that helped increase Ohio’s forest coverage to about one-third by the early 21st century, and to preserve 350 bird species for whom Ohio is home.

The first known non-native person to reach the area was French explorer Robert de La Salle, who arrived around 1670. French fur traders followed and began to settle in the area, but in 1763 the British claimed the area after winning the French and Indian War. After the Revolutionary War ended in 1783, Ohio became part of the American territory and became the 17th state in 1803.

Ohio is one of the great industrial states, thanks to a good location, a rich store of natural resources, productive soils, cheap energy, and ample transportation facilities.
