Cities and Towns in the United States > State California > El Dorado County
El Dorado County goes from the Gold Country foothills east of Sacramento up into the Lake Tahoe basin. Placerville, the county seat, was called Hangtown during the rush that followed James Marshall's 1848 gold discovery at Sutter's Mill in Coloma. Apple Hill, just east of town, has over 50 orchards open each fall. The county is also one of California's oldest wine regions, with vineyards planted across the El Dorado AVA. Higher up, Emerald Bay and Desolation Wilderness are among the most visited spots on Lake Tahoe. Near Placerville, the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Farm Colony was founded in 1869 as the first Japanese settlement in North America.
